  • Granny Square

    April 9, 2026

A granny square is often one of the very first projects people tackle when learning to knit or crochet. With only a handful of basic stitches, you can create eye‑catching patterns that feel both simple and rewarding. Repeating the process not only builds confidence and skill, but can also lead to something larger—like a snug blanket made by joining all the squares together. Granny squares are also a wonderful way to play with color, allowing you to mix and match shades to reflect your personal style. They’re fun, relaxing, and endlessly creative, and I often find myself stitching up granny squares between bigger projects using leftover yarn.

This project follows the same idea of repeating a simple pattern for an extended length, but instead of forming a square, you’ll create a rectangle. To add a little extra flair, you can turn the finished piece into an infinity scarf by joining the two ends together. This can be done with a darning needle by using the leftover yarn to weave the ends through the stitches. If you don’t have a darning needle, your crochet hook works just as well, you can simply crochet the ends together for a clean finish.

This is likely one of the simplest projects for both knitters and crocheters, making it perfect for beginners. The process is all about repeating the same pattern until you end up with a square—or even a slightly uneven one, which works just as well—for a potholder. I love using mine whenever I have a hot bowl of soup or noodles, whether I’m eating at the table or curled up on the couch with it in my lap. It’s one of those small projects that quickly becomes more useful than you might expect!
